The Potsdam Public Museum seeks a full time Director/Curator. Founded in 1940, “the museum is a non-profit educational institution. As such, it strives to collect, preserve, study and exhibit artifacts and materials relating to the history of Potsdam, NY, and the surrounding area.” 


The museum is a department of the Village of Potsdam, with a constitution and bylaws. It is governed by an independent board of trustees who report to the Village Board of Trustees. The museum serves the community through exhibitions, public programs, school programs, and internships with area high school and college students.

 

The omega replica watches museum’s primary focus is to preserve the history of the area through preservation and conservation and to make the collection and archives accessible by digitizing records and sharing the collection on-line and through exhibitions and public programs. Our archival collection includes family files, letters, diaries, digitized photographs, Civil War records, and maps.

 

Previous exhibitions have explored Victorian holiday traditions; Ice Hockey, Ice Sculptures & Ice Cutting; Sheep - Wool & Weaving; The Clarkson Family; The History of Tattoos; China - Land of Silk and Dragons; and The History of Technology and Communications.

 

The museum offers public programs such as: Holiday Open House, Civil War Re-enactment, Fright Night, and concerts with local musicians. Our holiday program for area schools attracts over 300 students annually.

 

Students from area colleges utilize the museum archives for research projects and internships. Its extensive collections span the history of the village and include 18th-20th Century decorative arts, textiles, technology, tools, musical instruments, weapons, dolls, paintings and portraits.

 

The museum is open to the public year-round and is staffed by the Director, part-time staff, interns and volunteers.  The Director is the principal professional in the organization who oversees the work of the museum staff, interns, and volunteers. She/he is expected to be available for evening and weekend work as needed.

 

Several important initiatives are under way at this time including a building project to replace the historic windows, updating the website, inventory of collections, stained glass window restoration, and map conservation projects.

 

The museum has developed and established partnerships with the North Country Children’s Museum, Traditional Arts In Upstate New York (TAUNY), the Civil War Round Table of St. Lawrence County, St. Lawrence University, SUNY Potsdam, the Potsdam Chamber of Commerce,  Clarkson University, the Sweetgrass Foundation, the Northern New York Community Foundation, and others.

 

Other responsibilities include:

 

·       Fundraising events, solicitation of gifts, and planned giving.

·       Grant writing

·       Managing the museum’s website and social media platforms

·       Preparing agendas and attending village board meetings and meetings of both the Museum Board and Friends of the Museum.

·       Preparing and managing the museum’s budget, finances, invoices, deposits and payroll.

·       Entering contractual agreements on behalf of the museum.

·       Assure all staff and volunteers are properly screened, trained and supervised.

·       Other duties and responsibilities as necessary.

       

 

Minimum Qualifications:    

·       Bachelor’s degree in Public History, Museum Studies or a closely related field.

·       Two years’ experience working in a non-profit setting, preferably a history museum.

·       Passing the St. Lawrence County Civil Service Exam for Museum Curator.

Experience Preferred:

 

·       Understanding of museum funding sources available in New York State, working knowledge of PC based computer systems and MS Office Suite, Working knowledge of Past Perfect museum software.

·       Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices governing the operation of a museum and the maintenance of historical documents, records, and artifacts.

·       Knowledge of local history and historical source materials.

·       Good working knowledge of the principles and practices of financial management, public relations, and fundraising techniques.

·       Ability to organize and direct the work of staff and volunteers; minimum of two years’ experience preferred.


Salary: $30,000 – $40,000  with excellent benefits package
